Privacy

In short: everything you save on BibleTide stays on your device. The site uses no cookies and no trackers. It counts its visitors without any ID, so no one can be told apart or followed (see “Visitor numbers”).

What is stored on your device

Your highlights, notes, bookmarks, reading-plan progress, settings and history are saved in your browser’s storage on this device, and so are the days on which you opened a chapter (for the reading streak) and which “How are you feeling?” passages you have already seen. So that the site works offline, your browser also keeps a copy of the site’s files. None of this is sent to us.

Why it stays on your device

What you read, mark and write about the Bible can reveal your religious beliefs. Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), personal data that reveals religious beliefs is a special category of data that needs extra protection (Article 9). Keeping it on your device means it never reaches us.

What is sent to the server

Your browser sends the server only the requests any website needs: requests for the site’s pages and data files. The site adds nothing about you to them: no account, no identifier, no reading history and none of the things you save.

Like every website, the server receives the internet (IP) address that each request comes from. The site is hosted by OVHcloud on a server in London, United Kingdom. The server’s log of requests stores each IP address shortened to its first half (enough to see roughly the country or network, not the person) and is deleted after 30 days.

Visitor numbers

To know how many people use the site, it counts browsers per day, week and month. Your browser remembers only the day, the week and the month it was last counted. At most once a day it sends this server one short request saying which of the three is new, for example /hello?d=1&w=0&m=0&n=0&l=en&a=0: d, w and m are 1 for the first visit of the day, week or month; n is 1 for the very first visit on this browser; l is the site’s language; a is 1 when the site is opened as an installed app.

The request carries no ID, no cookie and nothing about what you read. Adding the requests up gives the totals, and that is all they can give: they cannot tell visitors apart or follow anyone.

The same switch is in Reading settings. With it off, the browser sends nothing and the site works the same.

No cookies, no trackers, no third parties

The site sets no cookies and uses no analytics or tracking tools from other companies. It loads nothing from other companies’ servers: fonts and code are served by this site. Links to other websites, for example in the credits, take you to those sites, which have their own privacy policies.

Read aloud plays recordings stored on this site (the natural voices), or uses the voices built into your device. A recording is requested from this site like any page, and a device voice keeps the text on your device. If you choose a device voice marked “online”, your browser sends the text being read to the company that provides that voice; the site itself never does.

Export and delete your data

On the My notes page you can export everything you have saved to a file, import it on another device, or delete it all in one step. Clearing this site’s data in your browser settings also deletes it, so export it first if you want to keep it.
